All of Foraged North's wild rice is harvested in Northwestern Ontario. Since each lake and river is different each year, the wild rice is harvested in different places to keep the natural crops producing every year. Harvesting sustainably is the key to maintaining these amazing plants and to ensure there will be good annual harvests and, as such, Foraged North never harvest more that 20% in one area at a time. Foraged North are non-certified organic.
Foraged North are sellers of locally harvested Canadian Pure Wild Rice. The plants have never been planted or re-seeded. All wild rice grows naturally in the lakes and rivers in this area of Northwestern Ontario. The harvesting is done in the fall of each year, and each harvest is different depending on Mother Nature. Some years the water levels are too high, too low, or there are insects that eat the rice before they harvest. In short, they never know what the season will be like. Foraged North hires local Indigenous people who use their own specialty air boats to harvest for them. They gather the green rice at the shores and then bag it up and take to the processing plant.
