What's Coming to The Market in July!

What's Coming to The Market in July!

It's hard to believe July is already here, and with it, some more amazing local produce is coming our way! From peaches, plums and cherries to broccoli, fennel, chard and zucchini, there's so much incredible seasonal produce to get excited about coming to The Market during the month of July.

As we hear more from our farmers about upcoming produce availability during the month of July, we'll continue to add to this list!

    Broccoli (Top Tomato Farm)

We've got broccoli coming from our friends at Top Tomato Farm, starting in July! The de Filippis family has been farming for over 55 years. They began with a focus on broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage but have experimented with many varieties in the years since!

As a cool-season plant, broccoli is typically planted in Spring and late summer and harvested midsummer and late Fall.

Broccoli is extremely versatile and can be used in anything from soups, salads, and stir-fry or simply be steamed, sautéed, puréed, or eaten raw.

    Cherries (Mathias Farm)

Our sweet cherries from Mathias Farm in Ridgeville, Ontario are arriving soon! Beth and Tom Mathias grew up working on their parent's family farm, and in 1974 they took it over from their father Joe.

Mathias' cherries are picked at the peak of their ripeness and have a balanced, sweet-tart flavor. They use an integrated pest management system to limit spraying needed for their cherry trees. They also have a pick your own operation during peak season.

    Sweet Corn (Welsh Bros)

That's right, Welsh Bros sweet corn is coming soon! A Market and 100km Foods chef favourite, there is something truly special about this sweet corn. The premium flavour, robust size, and just-picked freshness are just some of the characteristics of Welsh Bros sweet corn that truly sets in apart!

Keep an eye out for this corn coming later in July!

    Fennel (Zephyr Organics)

Fennel is one of those vegetables you either love or hate! It has a mild licorice flavor and crunchy texture when eaten raw, and the flavor becomes more delicate and the texture softens when cooked.

We have some gorgeous organic fennel coming to The Market in July from Zephyr Organics. Zephyr Organics has been growing certified organic vegetables for 21 years, now on their third-generation family-owned farm.

Fennel can be sauteed, braised, baked and added to soups or stews. The feathery leaves have an even milder flavor and can be used in soups and salads, as a garnish, or as an herb for seasoning.

    Peaches (Warner's Farm)

There's something truly magical about biting into that first peach of summer and devouring all that sweet summer goodness! Peach season is just around the corner with our peaches arriving in July from the orchards of Warner's Farm in Beamsville, Ontario.

The rich soil, mild climate, excellent drainage, and abundant water of the Niagara region makes it especially well suited to grow peaches and a wide variety of fruits.

Enjoy them fresh out of the basket as a snack, bake with them, chop them up and add them to salads, grill them, or freeze them to enjoy throughout the year!

    Easter Egg Radishes (Cookstown)

Easter egg radishes are these adorable little radishes that come in an assortment of colours from white to pink to crimson to purple, all in one bunch! Their flesh is bright white and crisp with a mild peppery radish flavor.

These pretty veggies are coming to The Market in July from Cookstown Greens!

    Zucchini (Top Tomato Farm)

Fun fact: did you know that zucchini means "small pumpkin" in Italian? Although it looks nothing like a pumpkin and more like a cucumber, a zucchini is in fact a type of summer squash!

Zucchini loves warm weather and needs full sun and consistently moist soil to grow which is why it thrives in the summer months!

Our first harvest of green and yellow zucchini from Top Tomato Farm is expected to hit The Market in July! Zucchini is an incredibly versatile vegetable, great to add to salads, stir fries or to grill on the BBQ. It's also great to use in baking, especially in muffins, breads or brownies to sneak some more vegetables into your diet!

    Blueberries (Barrie Hill Farms)

Our highbush blueberries from Barrie Hill Farms will also be arriving at The Market in late July! Fresh, sweet, and woodsy, highbush blueberries are larger in size and are harvested earlier than lowbush blueberries.

Barrie Hill Farms has been growing high-bush blueberries since the early 1980's and is one of the largest blueberry farms in Ontario.
